Radio Cuba Canta presents a tribute to the great Cuban musical institution, Septeto Nacional Ignacio Piñeiro!

Host and Cuban music historian Emiliano Echeverria is joined by Luis Medina of KPFA's Con Sabor to present a special interview with members of Septeto Nacional, discussing the group's history since its formation in 1927, and its original founder, Ignacio Piñero.

Septeto Nacional was finally allowed to enter the United States and bring their classic Cuban son to enthusiastic audiences in New York, Miami and California. Their performances at Yoshi's Jazz Club in San Francisco quickly sold out. Other performances have been added, but are going fast!

The program also features a jam session recorded in the KPFA Studios with members of el Septeto joined by Bay Area Cuban son-fusion group Pellejo Seco, with special guest Tito Gonzalez.

On August 24th, Radio Cuba Canta commemorates the Birthday of "El Barbaro del Ritmo", Benny Moré!.   Listen! [link]


Broadcast veteran and Cuban music historian Emiliano Echeverria presents his rare and vintage collection of Benny Moré, from his earliest recordings with the Conjunto Matamoros in 1945 to his final recording made in his home a few weeks before his death in 1963.

We feature Benny with popular orchestras of the late 40s and early 50s in Mexico and Cuba, including Rafael de Paz, Mariano Mercerón, Conjunto Humberto Cane, Ernesto Duarte, and, of course, Damaso Perez Prado. Hear Benny’s Banda Gigante in both studio and live settings, as well as seldom heard recordings from early in Benny Moré’s career.

Luis Medina returns this week to the KPFA airwaves with Con Sabor, presenting an exclusive interview with Rafael Lay Jr., bandleader of Orquesta Aragon on their new US tour and the upcoming live performance in the San Francisco Bay area at Zellerbach Hall. The program will feature music from Orquesta Aragon, along with tickets to the concert on August 13th.

We’ll hear some Danzones from the near and distant past plus some 1950s Charanga sounds, and feature a tribute to the life and music of Francisco Aguabella.


We will also be joined by Cuban visa attorney Bill Martinez to discuss the current efforts to bring Cuban musicians to perform in the United States, include a mix of some 60s and 70s Cuban sounds, the Community Music Calendar from Ron Flores, and conclude with some great Timba and Cuban Hip-hop……..

Producer Emiliano Echeverria will present recordings from his collection of rare and vintage Cuban music featuring Graciela from her first sessions with the Orquesta Anacona with founder Yolanda Castro (who also passed away, on April 4th), through her career with the orchestra of her brother Machito, her continued work with Mario Bauza, and her last sessions with master percussionist, Candido Camero.

International Womens' Month

Tonight we present a commemoration of  International Women's Month with our second annual program dedicated to presenting some of the women who have contributed to the music of Cuba. We will hear early singers such as Maria Teresa Vera, Sexteto Anacaona, Paulina Alvarez, Rita Montaner, Celeste Mendoza and Las Hermanas Marquez, as well as contemporary singers like Vannia Borges, Yeny Valdes, Halia Mompie and Myra Caridad Valdes.
